Fashion: Holes In The Sides Of Her Shoes

From the catwalk to the red carpet, the hot footwear trend this season is cutout sandals. Evolved from their trendy ankle-boot ancestors, they offer a sexy spin on booties for warm weather. Oscar de la Renta has snipped straight to the point with the befittingly named Cut-Out Bootie, which maintains the classic ankle-boot shape but exposes a triangle of skin just behind the toes (€489; neimanmarcus .com). Jimmy Choo has created the rebellious Anise Biker Leather Sandal, embellished with bold gems that will be sure to sparkle the next time you take your Ducati motorcycle out for a spin (€866; www.jimmychoo.com). For a softer look, the Manolo Blahnik Hande sandals come in black, gray or turquoise leather and feature triple straps and button closures (€632), while the whimsical red Bu sandals, with a provocative black-and-white striped heel, might have been Dorothy’s shoe of choice (€626; manolo blahnik.com). But stealing the spotlight is the metallic Christian Dior Extreme Cutout Sandal, which comes in either silver or gold-tone python finish. With stud detailing and a nearly 12cm-tall heel, this chic sandal shows just the right ratio of python to human skin, and holes that definitely don’t need filling (€531; dior.com).

Schuh’s footing sure as profits soar

Posted by footwearglobal on June 29, 2008, Sunday

Saturday, 20th June 2008

SCHUH, the Livingston headquartered footwear retailer, is planning to open more stores in England and Ireland this year after record strong growth in earnings and sales.

The firm’s books filed at Companies House showed the company reaped the rewards from an up-market strategy that let it avoid the problems affecting many of its discount rivals.

In the year to March, Schuh prospered while retailers such as Dolcis failed to compete with supermarkets and discount clothes stores selling footwear.

The company, under the leadership of managing director, Colin Temple, posted 17 per cent growth in earnings before interest, depreciation and amortisation, to £11.7 million.

Its performance was boosted by the opening of four new stores, increasing the size of the Schuh organisation to 50 branches in the UK and Ireland. The firm grew sales 11 per cent to £118.5m.

Schuh has used eBay as an innovative way of moving stock in efforts to cope with customer jitters in the high street.

Gross profits showed 15.6 per cent of sales in the latest period, compared with 14.8 per cent in the preceding year.

Terry Racionzer, Schuh’s chairman said no-one had been immune from the pressures firms faced in a hard year selling specialist footwear.

“Reduced footfall on the one hand and the effect of widespread increases in the frequency and scope of price-led promotions continue to pose a significant challenge,” he said.

Researchers- Flip-Flops Bad For Feet

Posted by footwearglobal on June 29, 2008, Sunday

Flip-flops” or “thongs” – Effect on Feet?

This little article brings a little research to the subject

Researchers at Auburn University have found that wearing flip-flops alters the way one walks, changing the gait in subtle ways that can lead to serious sole, heel and ankle problems. They presented these findings earlier this month at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis.

The Auburn team videotaped 39 flip-flop-wearing volunteers and noticed how they scrunched their toes to keep the flip-flip on the foot while the heel lifted in the air. This motion stretches the plantar fascia, the connective tissue that runs from heel to toe, causing inflammation, pain along the sole, heel spurs and tired feet in general.
These symptoms were actually what flip-flop wearers at Auburn University had reported upon returning to classes in the fall. An entire summer of flip-flop wearing had taken its toll.
The researchers also found that the volunteers altered their gait, taking shorter strides and turning their ankles inward, likely to keep the flip-flop from falling off. This, the researchers worry, can cause long-term ankle and hip problems.

Bhutanese boots overshadow Perry’s fancy footwear

Posted by footwearglobal on June 29, 2008, Sunday

Source: Statesman.com

“This is one of the very few times in my life that I’ve been out-booted,” admitted Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The knee-high, brightly colored footwear worn by Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck of Bhutan and Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, Bhutan’s minister of cultural affairs, made the governor’s customary cowboy boots look downright dowdy.

NPD Reports Major European Markets Showing Growth in ‘Leisure & Classics’ Footwear

Major European Markets Showing Growth in ‘Leisure & Classics’ Footwear

Online Purchasing Also on the Rise

The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company reports the European athletic footwear market is seeing the biggest growth in ‘Leisure & Classics’ or low performance athletic shoes, sneaker-type shoes designed primarily for fashion and style rather than pursuit of a specific sport. Annual 2007 figures for Europe’s Big 5* market show that sales of athletic footwear used for leisure grew by 2% while sales of athletic footwear used for sport declined 5%. NPD is seeing a similar trend in the U.S. athletic footwear market, where sales of low performance shoes showed a 12.4% increase for Annual 2007.

“The long-term trend we see is that sport inspired/fashion focused shoes are taking over market share from more functional shoes. Clearly, this is a trend that is here to stay and will be a primary driver of growth in the European sport industry.” said Renaud Vaschalde, sports industry analyst, Europe.

This is a trend that is crossing demographic boundaries, too. Women tell NPD they love these fashion forward shoes but wear them more for after work pursuits while their daughters wear them on a daily basis. Men are currently buying into this trend but are opting for vintage or classic style shoes. Styles from the Air Max series or Stan Smith shoes are among the most popular with male consumers. “The male consumer still remains very interested in the functional/performance oriented shoes when they are serious about pursuing a specific sport.” noted Vaschalde.

The five best-selling athletic footwear styles in Europe for Annual 2007 are all ‘Leisure & classics’ styles.

Top Selling Athletic Footwear Styles in Europe

                           Adidas adi racer

                            Asics whizzer
----------------------------------------------------------------------
                          Converse all star

According to Vaschalde, the main driver behind this growth trend is higher acceptance of these sport inspired shoes in the workplace and hence in daily life. While teenagers and 18-34 year olds account for the largest share of purchases, popularity is growing in the 35-44 year old group, fueling the trend

Online Purchasing is Also on the Rise

NPD reports that just as what consumers are purchasing is changing, so is how they are purchasing. Internet sales experienced steady growth over the last four years, making up 8 percent of total footwear sales in 2007 compared to only two percent in 2002.

For Annual 2007 overall, Great Britain had the highest share of Internet sales while Italy and Spain had very little. In the categories of shoes purchased online, Football shoes garnered the largest share at 10%, and Running shoes got 7%.

“The sport industry in Europe is dynamic and ever evolving. The sport marketplace will be one we continue to study.” said Vaschalde, “And we will continue to help the industry understand and keep pace with it.” concluded Vaschalde.

*European Big5 Countries are: United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain
